Still alive after slowing down!

So I lived! Driving 55 mph was not that bad. I finally ran out of gas last Friday and had to tank up. At $3.98 I was happy that my car did 448 miles on 15 gallons!!

The strange thing is that my car mpgs went down as I was approaching the empty tank. So the final mpgs deteriorated by 1 gal (3.2%) which I am not sure why.

I am better in handling the stares of the motorists as the pass me by even as I am driving in far right lane. I did fail few times in the city to observe my restraint as I had to move quickly to avoid potentially dangerous situation.

One thing to note, when you have friends in the car it's VERY hard to drive slow, for some reason I feel like I am wasting their time...

I think I will continue with the experiment and see what happens...

Interesting

My Hyundai Veracruz seems to get it's best highway gas mileage closer to 65 mph, but that's primarily from observing what the mpg gauge is telling me, so who knows how accurate that is. I really noticed it on the drive to Orlando, where I had a lot of relatively open roads with varying speed limits.

Super cool!

My Toyota Echo (4 Cyl. no horsepower) seems to do almost 35% better when I'm going below 60 - on the highway where I average 75+ the mileage drops to 35 mpg (in warm weather). Same weather at 45-55 and I get 45 mpg - if only my wish to save money exceeded my wish to be at my destination.  Excellent work, sir.

American Cars

It makes me laugh when I read about American cars and fuel efficiency.  Have you tried a European or Japanese car?

Seriously we've got a little Suzuki Swift 1l (3 cylinder) that I drove hard across a road here in Britain called the Heads of the Valleys (goes across the south of the mountains in Wales) and that was averaging 65+ all the way and measured a fuel consumption of 48mpg, that was motorway, dual carridge-way and country lanes.

I also did a longish trip up to Scotland in our Shogun (1993 reg) and that with over 1/4 of a tonne in the boot averaged 25mpg at 70mph on motorways and driven hard through the mountains on the way back down through Wales (including a 3 hour stint shooting rabbits in the low range box).

Even the new TDV8 Supercharged Sport from Land Rover:

Can manage 25mpg while offering almost exactly the same performance of the V8 petrol engine.  And please note that this is a 2.5 tonne 4x4 capable of 0-60 in under 10 seconds and a top (limited) speed of 155mph, yet unlike the American 4x4s can still go offroad.

Sorry but proud to be British and proud of British cars.
