Removing Windows Vista Remote Desktop warning when connecting to Windows 2003 server

On a fresh install of Vista, you will get the following warning every time you try to connect to a Windows 2003 server using Remote Desktop included in Vista (which is Remote Desktop version 6.0.6000.16386):

Remote Desktop cannot verify the identity of the computer you want to connect to.

If you are in a work environment where you trust the Windows 2003 servers you connect to, you can safely remove this warning by adding an entry to your Vista machine's Registry:

  1. Open Regedit

  2. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client
  3. Add The DWORD (32-bit) Value AuthenticationLevelOverride and give it the value 0

Your entry should look like this:

That's it! No need to restart or logout; you can just open a new remote desktop connection to test your changes.

This warning appears when one tries to connect to ANYTHING. Does this registry edit work for all connections or just those involving Server 2003? Would it not be better to create an *rdp shortcut, specific to the machine you're looking to connect to, instead of a blanket registry edit that cover everything? RoninV

It really depends on what's you're doing. I connect to multiple internal machines so in my case I did not want to keep a shortcut to every random machine I have to connect to.

RoninV suggests that there is an .RDP specific setting to override this warning message. Is there? if so, what is it? Thanks for the tip - i've been looking to get rid of that annoyance.

Not sure... I didn't try it out as it wasn't solving my issues. Creating a shorcut in general is easy; you just have to open the Remote Desktop Connection tool, click on options, then "Save as...". Good luck!

Thanks a lot!!!!

Before connecting, in Remote Desktop, do the following: Click on “Options” Click on the “Advanced Tab” In “Authentication Options”, select “Always connect, even if authentication fails"

... so i've read a few of your posts and I dont understand why you go straight to regedit. the most classic example is your outlook regedit post ... you can simply change a setting in the UI and get the exact same results. I am more impressed by how many people post "thank you" than the actual regedit tip itself ... the fact that you got so many people "hackin the reg" for no justified reason amuses me.

The outlook post can be done outside of the registry, which I learned by one of the comments! If you find other things which can be done outside of the registry please post a comment. Most of the registry changes I found came from MSDN articles recommending using the registry.

Alex: The reason you would go "straight to regedit" is simple....what if you want to make an automated change for 6000+ users (like I sometimes have to do.) - changing the setting in the UI for 6000 people is a little tougher that a reghack in a script.
